Our 2023 rankings named Rochester Institute of Technology the best school in New York for trade school students working on their basic certificate. Located in Rochester, New York, the fairly large private not-for-profit school awarded 9 diplomas to qualifed basic certificate students in 2021-2022.
RIT does not offer a discount to in-state students, so the average tuition and fees for all undergraduates is $53,538. This amount may be reduced if you receive financial aid.
Online courses are available at RIT, but you will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your field of interest. In fact, around 66% of the undergraduate population registered for at least one online class in 2020-2021.
You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend The Graduate Center, CUNY. It ranked #2 on our 2023 Best Basic Certificate Trade Schools in New York list. The Graduate Center is a medium-sized public school situated in New York, New York. It awarded 62 basic certificates in 2021-2022.
The average in-state tuition and fees for students at The Graduate Center is $7,410. If you are from out of state, expect to pay an average of $15,360.
One thing to take note of is that The Graduate Center does offer online classes in some areas. In 2020-2021 about 99% of the undergraduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
The excellent basic certificate programs at St. Joseph’s College - New York helped the school earn the #3 place on this year’s ranking of the best trade school schools in New York. The average in-state tuition and fees for students at SUNY Empire is $7,630. Out-of-state students pay an average of $17,540.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Dutchess Community College. It ranked #5 on our 2023 Best Basic Certificate Trade Schools in New York list. Located in Poughkeepsie, New York, the medium-sized public school awarded 29 diplomas to qualifed basic certificate students in 2021-2022.

Mildred Elley Albany did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best places for trade school students to get a basic certificate. It came in at #8 on the list. Albany, New York is the setting for this very small institution of higher learning. The private for-profit school handed out basic certificates to 19 students in 2021-2022.
Mildred Elley Albany does not offer a discount to in-state students, so the average tuition and fees for all undergraduates is $14,253. This amount may be reduced if you receive financial aid.

Erie Community College did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best places for trade school students to get a basic certificate. It came in at #10 on the list. Located in Buffalo, New York, the medium-sized public school awarded 81 diplomas to qualifed basic certificate students in 2021-2022.
In-state students pay an average of $5,950 in tuition and fees if they attend Erie Community College full time. Out-of-state students pay an average of $11,150.
Erie Community College does offer online classes for certain degree levels. Of all the undergraduates enrolled at the school during the 2020-2021 academic year, around 38% took at least some of their classes online.
SUNY Ulster came in at #11 in this year’s edition of the Best Basic Certificate Trade Schools in New York ranking. This small public school is located in Stone Ridge, New York, and it awarded 62 basic certificates in 2021-2022.
The average in-state tuition and fees for students at SUNY Ulster is $5,940. Out-of-state students pay an average of $11,020.

In-state students pay an average of $5,252 in tuition and fees if they attend KCC full time. If you are from out of state, expect to pay an average of $8,132.
