This report analyzed 12 schools in New York to see which ones offered the best basic certificate programs for trade school students.

Our 2023 rankings named Rochester Institute of Technology the best school in New York for trade school students working on their basic certificate. This fairly large private not-for-profit school is located in Rochester, New York, and it awarded 9 basic certificates in 2021-2022.
If you don’t receive financial aid, you can expect a bill for $53,538 to cover tuition and fees at RIT. The school does not offer an in-state discount.
One thing to take note of is that RIT does offer online classes in some areas. During the 2020-2021 year, about 66% of the undergraduates at the school took at least one online course.
Out of the 12 schools in New York that were part of this year’s ranking, The Graduate Center, CUNY landed the # 2 spot on the list. The Graduate Center is located in New York, New York and has a medium-sized student population. In 2021-2022, this school awarded 62 basic certificates to qualified students.
In-state students pay an average of $7,410 in tuition and fees if they attend The Graduate Center full time. If you are from out of state, expect to pay an average of $15,360.
If you are interested in distance education, be sure to check with the school since The Graduate Center does offer online classes for certain majors. During the 2020-2021 year, about 99% of the undergraduates at the school took at least one online course.
You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around you if you attend St. Joseph’s College - New York. The school came in at #3 on this year’s Best Basic Certificate Trade Schools in New York list. SJC is located in Brooklyn, New York and has a small student population. In 2021-2022, this school awarded 45 basic certificates to qualified students.
If you want to attend SJC, expect to pay an average of $32,370 in tuition and fees. Of course, this could be reduced if you receive financial aid.
SJC does have options available for those who want to take online classes. You will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your specific major. During the 2020-2021 year, about 53% of the undergraduates at the school took at least one online course.
A rank of #4 on this year’s list means SUNY Empire State College is a great place for trade school students working on their basic certificate. SUNY Empire is located in Saratoga Springs, New York and has a medium-sized student population. In 2021-2022, this school awarded 19 basic certificates to qualified students.
The average in-state tuition and fees for students at SUNY Empire is $7,630. If you are from out of state, expect to pay an average of $17,540.
You may have the opportunity to take online classes at SUNY Empire. In 2020-2021 about 87% of the undergraduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
Out of the 12 schools in New York that were part of this year’s ranking, Dutchess Community College landed the # 5 spot on the list. DCC is a medium-sized public school situated in Poughkeepsie, New York. It awarded 29 basic certificates in 2021-2022.
In-state students pay an average of $5,174 in tuition and fees if they attend DCC full time. Out-of-state students pay an average of $9,774.
DCC does offer online classes for certain degree levels. In fact, around 41% of the undergraduate population registered for at least one online class in 2020-2021.
Tompkins Cortland Community College ranked #6 on this year’s Best Basic Certificate Trade Schools in New York list. Tompkins Cortland is a small public school situated in Dryden, New York. It awarded 10 basic certificates in 2021-2022.
Students from New York who attend Tompkins Cortland full time pay an average of $6,790 in tuition and fees. Those students who come from outside the state pay an average of $12,558.
One thing to take note of is that Tompkins Cortland does offer online classes in some areas. During the 2020-2021 year, about 31% of the undergraduates at the school took at least one online course.
With a ranking of #7, Monroe Community College did quite well on this year’s best schools for trade school students working on their basic certificate. Rochester, New York is the setting for this medium-sized institution of higher learning. The public school handed out basic certificates to 4 students in 2021-2022.
Students from New York who attend Monroe Community College full time pay an average of $5,712 in tuition and fees. If you are from out of state, expect to pay an average of $10,468.
Online courses are available at Monroe Community College, but you will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your field of interest. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 82% of undergraduates took at least one course online in 2020-2021.
Mildred Elley Albany ranked #8 on this year’s Best Basic Certificate Trade Schools in New York list. Albany, New York is the setting for this very small institution of higher learning. The private for-profit school handed out basic certificates to 19 students in 2021-2022.
If you don’t receive financial aid, you can expect a bill for $14,253 to cover tuition and fees at Mildred Elley Albany. The school does not offer an in-state discount.
One thing to take note of is that Mildred Elley Albany does offer online classes in some areas. During the 2020-2021 year, about 50% of the undergraduates at the school took at least one online course.
Jamestown Community College landed the #9 spot in the 2023 rankings for the best basic certificate trade school programs. Located in Jamestown, New York, the small public school awarded 23 diplomas to qualifed basic certificate students in 2021-2022.
Students from New York who attend Jamestown Community College full time pay an average of $6,450 in tuition and fees. Out-of-state students pay an average of $11,750.
Some students may be able to take online classes at Jamestown Community College. During the 2020-2021 year, about 37% of the undergraduates at the school took at least one online course.
Erie Community College ranked #10 on this year’s Best Basic Certificate Trade Schools in New York list. This medium-sized public school is located in Buffalo, New York, and it awarded 81 basic certificates in 2021-2022.
Students from New York who attend Erie Community College full time pay an average of $5,950 in tuition and fees. Those students who come from outside the state pay an average of $11,150.
You may have the opportunity to take online classes at Erie Community College. In fact, around 38% of the undergraduate population registered for at least one online class in 2020-2021.
SUNY Ulster came in at #11 in this year’s edition of the Best Basic Certificate Trade Schools in New York ranking. SUNY Ulster is a small public school located in Stone Ridge, New York that handed out 62 basic certificates in 2021-2022.
Students from New York who attend SUNY Ulster full time pay an average of $5,940 in tuition and fees. Out-of-state students pay an average of $11,020.
Depending on your major, you may be able to take online classes at SUNY Ulster. In 2020-2021 about 45% of the undergraduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
Kingsborough Community College did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best places for trade school students to get a basic certificate. It came in at #12 on the list. Kingsborough Community College is a fairly large public school located in Brooklyn, New York that handed out 3 basic certificates in 2021-2022.
In-state students pay an average of $5,252 in tuition and fees if they attend KCC full time. Those students who come from outside the state pay an average of $8,132.
Some students may be able to take online classes at KCC. Of all the undergraduates enrolled at the school during the 2020-2021 academic year, around 97% took at least some of their classes online.
